The name Saladin is a Romanisation of the Arabic honorific epithet Salah ad–Din, meaning 'Righteousness of the Faith'. Saladin's birth name was Yusuf ibn Ayyub, and he was known in full as An–Nasir Salah ad–Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub. (The title Nasir has several related meanings in Arabic, including 'champion', 'hero', and 'warrior'.)
